Named after William Booth – Salvation Army founder
A British Methodist preacher who founded The Salvation Army and became its first General, Booth began his working life as a pawnbroker. His daily contact with the poor made him concerned to do something for them. So in 1865, alongside his wife Catherine he founded the charity with a quasi-military structure to bring the Christian message to the poor, destitute and hungry.
